Recipe by Hannah Kaminsky

Craving the bold flavors of falafel but looking for a protein-packed twist? Falafel-Crusted Tofu is here to deliver! This ingenious recipe transforms plain tofu into crispy, flavorful bites bursting with the warm spices and herbs of falafel. Healthier and easier to prepare than conventional deep-fried falafel balls, these savory morsels go right into the air fryer, no oil required. You get a crispy, toasted crust surrounding soft, meaty tofu, ideal for pairing with salads, rice bowls, pita pockets, or just munching on its own, dipped in tahini sauce!

Ingredients

  • 1 (10 oz) package Hodo Extra Firm Tofu Locate Product

    ½ cup chickpea flour

    1 teaspoon dried parsley

    ¾ teaspoon ground cumin

    ¾ teaspoon ground coriander

    ½ teaspoon garlic powder

    ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

    ½ teaspoon salt

    ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

¼ cup aquafaba or plain, unsweetened non-dairy milk

Olive oil spray, as needed (optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by slicing the tofu in half lengthwise, creating two large, thin slabs. Cut each rectangle in half to make squares, and then slice those squares diagonally, yielding eight triangles.

  2. In a shallow dish, combine the chickpea flour, parsley, cumin, coriander, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well to evenly distribute all the seasonings throughout. Pour the aquafaba or non-dairy milk into a separate small dish.

  3. Take one or two triangles at a time and dip them first into the liquid, then into the dry ingredients. Gently toss with the dry ingredients to completely coat the surface of the tofu on all sides. Place on an air fryer rack lined with foil. Repeat with the remaining tofu.

  4. Once all the tofu is evenly coated, lightly spritz with oil, if using. Air fry at 370 degrees for 10 minutes until lightly browned on top. Flip the pieces over and air fry for another 5 minutes, until golden and crispy all over.

  5. Alternately, bake in a 400-degree preheated oven for 15 minutes, flip, then bake for another 10 minutes to achieve the same results.
